La première version de ce visuel semble avoir été élaborée en 2013 par Mikael Colville-Andersen afin d’illustrer le plaidoyer de l’entreprise Copenhagenize (qu’il a fondé en 2007) en faveur d’un urbanisme plus cyclable.

Une nouvelle version du visuel a été proposée en 2019 par la Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) : « A Short History of Traffic Engineering in industrialised cities: walking, cycling, public transport; car-oriented; planning for the livable city. »
